It takes longer to reach the sand than usual. So many people are waiting for the lift that, by the time we get down to the bottom, chattering has broken out and the urgency of Cap’n’s speech has worn off.

Badger doesn’t bother going over to the Needle. ‘No point yet, Alph. I can’t hear above this racket.’

CRACK. The air fizzles and I slam my hands over my ears.

Large stands at the tideline with an air gun. He shakes his head at all of us and puts the gun in his pocket. Enough of us could hear it to shut everyone else up. He lifts both hands up to his temples and then, keeping them the same width apart, pushes them forward towards us.

‘Concentrate,’ he signs and says.

‘Mwah,’ says Badger as she blows me a kiss and scurries off to the Needle.

‘Fwah,’ I reply.

Large pauses. We watch. He claps. Light flashes. We begin.
